Decay and Repair Project and ICAD Cards

For WOYWW today I have on my desk another six index cards for the ICAD challenge, and once again I'm working with the theme decay and repair.  I used tweed pieces and bits of antique lace, plus printed moth images.  During the often steep learning curve that is my art journey, I discovered that if you embroider a zigzag stitch around anything circular it looks like a sun drawn by a child!  Hence the rather large amount of zigzagging added to the bottom left card to try and detract from the 'sun' - it's an absolute disaster but I decided to keep it in - I am using these cards much as I would a sketchbook, for trying out ideas, so disasters really ought to stay as they are all part of the process!

For anyone interested I have a large embroidery that's pretty much finished now, and some moth photos that are all part of the 'decay and repair' theme on my previous blog post here

I have a real weakness for old teacups, and I thought this one went so well with the colours I 'd chosen for this weeks cards that I just had to photograph them together!

  1. Oh Diana , I could sit and stare at your work all day long, it is so fantastic. I like what you said about using the cards like a sketchbook of ideas.
Your photography shows of the details on the cards very well, thanks for that it's really good to be able to see it.
You are not the only one with a fetish for teacups haha.

  6. I love all these cards, Diana! Your compositions are wonderful and I love all the stitching. Using the lace and tweed adds such a wonderful tactile quality to them. Love the tea cup, by the way!

  9. I am so enjoying following this particular journey of yours, Diana - it's such an interesting theme - very unusual, and with a colour scheme to match. I found all my old record cards the other day and am delighted I didn't throw them away over the move! One day I shall use them for art. I so agree with you about leaving in the things you are not satisfied with, as they are all part of the journey. I was going to delete some of my early Youtube videos and blog posts but decided to leave them in as they are my baby steps which are an essential part of any journey!

Thanks for your lovely comment, and I'm so glad you like my little album! I am having a great time doing it as each new page is an experiment in creating backgrounds and textures. I love working on the black gesso background which has become the theme for this particular part of the book, but I have also created some lighter, more subtle colour schemes too. There should be plenty of variety by the end.

On the 5:2 diet, they recommend that your two partial fast days are not consecutive, which makes things a lot easier. I have chosen Tuesdays and Fridays, but if we happen to be going out on Friday, I can make it Monday and Thursday. Weekends are not so good because a lot of social eating tends to happen then. The greatest thing about this diet for me is that for the five non-fasting days, you eat normally! This has always been the problem for me with diets in the past (and for many other people) - I get fed up with watching what I eat constantly. This is what makes people give up, and the weight piles on again. This is the first truly manageable and sustainable diet I've come across and I've read such excellent reports of people doing it and keeping the weight off, that I just had to give it a try!! I'll keep everyone posted how I get on, on my blog.

    Happy WOYWW,

    1. It is a pretty cup isn't it - it's labelled underneath as Paon by R H Grove (Barlaston Stone) Staffordshire - I think it's Victorian.

  14. Hi Diana ah once again fab photos and no the card with the 'sun' looks great I wouldn't have thought of that if you hadnt pointed it out, all in the eye of the beholder eh!
The 3x3 photo mosaic would make a great print or greetings card. You have some great angles on the close ups. Look forward to seeing the finished embroidery

  16. I see no disaster in the stitching, but I take your point.....I like the added in straight stitching, looks good. Very much into china ware myself, love the vignette you've put together of the fab index cards and the teacup. Perfecto!

  18. Complete eye candy, I could just sit and look at them (especially if I wasn't supposed to be working). I adore the tweed, and what a wonderful color combination. And that cup...

  21. Wow! These are just beautiful! I love the colors you've used; not to mention the beautiful teacup as a prop! I'll have to check out your photography blog. I enjoy taking photos but haven't experimented with my camera at all. I should definitely do that.

    Happy belated WOYWW
