The Joy of Button Covering and WOYWW #361

Me: "I wish I had some velvet buttons for this embroidery"
Friend: "Just cover some yourself"
Me, sarcastically: "Yeah, right!"
Friend: "Get yourself a button coverer!"
WHAT!
How on earth did I not know about this, how has the whole craft of button covering managed to pass me by?
I went home, searched ebay and picked one up for a couple of quid - I've been covering buttons ever since, and I'm loving it!
I went a bit mad with my favourite green velvet as the buttons reminded me of cushions of moss.  I also covered some with bits of left over embossed velvet and I added some embroidery and beads.

I'm linking up with Julia (who knew exactly what a button coverer was) over at

  1. We all fell in love with your mossy cushions last Thursday!! Ooooer Missus :-D. They are so gorgeous, as were all your bits and pieces (featured on my blog today!) Your attention to detail is amazing, I loved seeing how you put things together. It was good to see you again too!

  2. Ohhh yes they do look like little cushions of moss .... how absolutely gorgeous and sweet. Lovely to see that a little button covering tool has given you pleasure. it never takes much to bring a smile to a crafter/artist face.
    have a lovely week.

  3. I've already told Jan I'm sat in the corner sulking and weeping and wailing because I didn't get to join in the fun.
Lovely buttons Diana. I covered some myself recently, it's quite addictive as is making fabric bows. Have you tried that ?

  5. Gasp! that's so beautiful - I never thought of embroidering on velvet, or covering my own buttons. The whole effect is totally gorgeous. Did you do the embossing as well? Annie C #26

  8. Cute little things - I can see how this can get addictive. I've already seen a sneak peek of them on Jan's blog. There's probably a market for these to sell to people who don't know about the button coverer! Happy Wednesday! zsuzsa #32

  11. Velvet buttons are so delicious. What in the world!! This is just like me to find out about something like this I should have been doing all along. Case in point--my pom pom maker! Happy Wednesday. Sandy Leigh #37

  12. I love your green buttons! I had heard about button coverers - not sure how or why, as I am not a seamstress by any stretch of the imagination - glad you're enjoying yours! Helen #1

  18. How funny!! Of course you should be covering buttons, if anyone should it's you! I think somewhere in the back of my head I knew there was such a thing as covering your own buttons, but it was buried way down! Your little mossy buttons are wonderful.

  20. Haha, yes, I did know about button covering :) I think I even know where my hand covered buttons are! If I dig them out I will put them on my blog next week, if you are interested.
Your green ones really do look like scrumptious moss covered fairy seats!
Thanks for dropping by earlier and for your lovely comment. Much appreciated :)

  21. Can't believe it either for someone as steeped in textiles as you! They are luscious, and looking forward to treasures revealed! X

  22. Like my little sis Annie - I have covered loads of buttons yet not heard of a button coverer! Your green velvet is scrumptious - and I love what you are making with it! x Jo

  23. Well, I'd not heard of one either, but then I tend to be somewhat sewing-phobic (used to put up the hems of my skirts with double-sided sellotape at school!) so I'd expect that from me. I've done some covering of buttons with stamped tissue paper in my time, but that's about my lot. Delighted you're enjoying your new toy, and I'm enjoying the results of your playtime, with all the additional detailing once the covering is done.

  24. These are lovely. I've seen self cover buttons, but the little tool for them is something I haven't seen and looks like it makes it a much easier job.

  25. I think I am need of this gadget!!! How fabulous and the possibilities are endless, yes I definitely must seek one out. Can I ask, is it easy enough to source the buttons to fit into the gadget?
The green velvet looks incredible beautiful and definitely conjures up dewy moss.

  26. Oooh gorgeous, Diana! I used to cover buttons quite a lot in my dressmaking days and have the gadget somewhere...somewhere lol! You have done a great job, especially as velvet is hardly the easiest fabric to start with, being quite thick and fraying quite easily. I love how you've used the bits of embossed velvet. That green velvet really is delicious, isn't it! I'm not surprised you're on such a roll with it.

Thank you for your lovely encouraging comment and I'm sorry I've been so long moderating and replying to it. As you know it's been a very busy period and over the weekend I've been pretty tired and in need of a good rest to catch up. I stupidly forgot to take a photo of our tea table until it was too late but I took some photos today of the individual plates of what was left over and I'll be blogging about that in due course. You are right - the three of us have a very strong bond, having shared the experience of bowel cancer and major surgery - but also, we just get on so well with each other and laugh at the same things! We have become such good friends and it's a real joy for each one of us.

    Have a great week!
    Happy belated WOYWW,

  28. Exquisite tiny delights, the details on those gorgeously coloured buttons is breath taking. Button covering reminds me of my childhood when my mum had a haberdashery shop and one of the jobs I would help with was to use the button covering machine. It was sturdy piece of equipment but it was fun to use. Fond memories... Ruth x
