WOYWW and Red Coral Embroidery

If you saw my previous post you'll know that I am in the middle of a wonderful embroidery course by Karen Ruane and I am having great fun.  This week I have been working on a piece of free machine embroidery based on the theme of red coral.  On my work desk is the first page of a sketch book I started a while ago on this coral idea, a selection of red threads and felt beads and a gorgeous piece of silk sari strip that I was desperate to use but it just didn't work with this!

I free machine embroidered the background on dyed cotton scrim, I wove red ribbon through it and then started the hand embroidery - I don't have much more to do but I do want to embroider the felt dome and possibly add another one.

The design for the little flower was taken directly from the torn out coral picture on my desk - I was going to do several but I wasn't happy with how it turned out so I decided not to.

I am linking up with WOYWW, where people get to nosy about at other people's work desks - it's great fun, why not go and have a peep!

  3. I love this idea, love this shade of red. Oh now, I do wish that I was so talented. I know nothing about sewing, other than taking in hems and sewing on buttons. You have such a gift! Really beautiful!

  6. How long did it take you to do all that hand embroidery? It looks incredibly complex to do but is so effective. The red on red is just such a fab idea...I wouldn't have thought of that but it's brilliant!

  14. It's a shame coral is so hard, Diana, because this looks so good that I could eat it lol lol!!! What a stunning piece of work. It reminds me of my embroidery days and how I should get back to it. I adore the rich coral colour and the subtle blend of shades you've created, and embroidering on dyed scrim is an inspiration - it's just fabulous how the loose threads pull apart and create such interesting textures. Your sketch is lovely, too, and I do like the contrast of the cool blue-grey with the vibrant coral colours. I'm going to bookmark this page so I can look at it often! Do please show us the finished piece!

Thank you for your lovely comment on my blog, and I'm glad you're enjoying the virtual tour of Romania. I am really looking foward to doing a post on the textiles and folk art because this blows my mind away - the vibrant colours etc. Unfortunately by the time I went, it was rare for people to be wearing Romanian national clothes everyday, and I didn't see any, but when my hubby first visited, they were everywhere.
