Moths and More Moths!

At the risk of being predictable, here is my work desk for WOYWW this week, and once more I have my index cards for the ICAD challenge - only 4 this week as I have had a lot on, but I'm pleased I managed that many!  I kept them fairly simple and used a combination of machine and hand stitching, with a few very small matt black beads.   On my learning curve this week I discovered that if you sew your stitches too close together on card you end up with the piece of embroidery falling completely out of the overly perforated outline!

OK, so it's a butterfly and not a moth - but what the heck, I love it and I think it goes well with the antique deeds.  This photo influenced my colour scheme for the index cards this week - I really like the simplicity of the black, white and brown

  1. Gorgeous! I love your work so much...sigh. You have such an eye for colour and design.
But you did make me laugh as I imagined you holding the finished card up and the middle dropping out!!! Lol

  3. Oh Diana, this is just mouth-wateringly gorgeous... The minimalist colour palette and the delicacy of the lace and embroidery is stunning... I am loving what you are doing at the moment and am in awe of your creativity and imagination. It's simply marvellous.

How are you storing/mounting/displaying the finished cards? This is something that interests me a lot at the moment as I am moving increasingly into 3-D projects like books that are definitely hands-on, touchy feely, interactive etc. I've been very impressed with Helen Allen's design for tag storage which makes a whole set of tags into a complete work of art in itself, and am wondering if you have something similar in mind.

Thanks for your visit and your lovely comment, and I'm glad you like the progress of my little book so far. Yesterday I neglected all my boring left-brain and domestic duties and got stuck in again - I'm fed up with having my studio-play-time relegated to the bottom of the heap all the time! Sometimes Art Will Out lol!

Thanks for the encouragement re the diet, too. I can't believe the progress I've already made, and how very easy it is to do. I think this is the first diet that will actually work for me.

    Happy WOYWW,

  4. Oh Diana, you create such beautiful things. I so love the white on the brown of the index cards. When I stitch on paper or card I paint the back first with acrylic wax. I think it helps with the perforations.

  5. These are great, Diana! I love the color palette, soft and subtle. Interesting about the too close stitches. Those black beads really pop against the soft white, too!

  6. I really like the simplicity of the black, brown and white too. These index cards are gorgeous. I've pinned them on my mixed media board.
Already looking forward to seeing what you create this week.
    Have fun

  7. The cards and the photos are beautiful! But I guess I always say that in my comments on your blog, huh? ;) I can't help it, it's true. I also love the simplicity of the black, white, and brown palette. I often work in those colors, and it's somehow freeing, rather than limiting as you'd expect such a pared down palette to be. You've really shown how elegant it can be here. And good lesson to learn about the stitching!

  8. P.S. As a recovering archivist (hehee...) I can attest to the damage that living moths and others of their insect brethren can inflict on paper documents like the ones you photographed here, and to the impressive skill that conservators employ to fix them up. A good candidate for your decay/repair series indeed!

  12. Wonderful pieces. I too like the combination of the neutral colours. The way the butterfly is trapped in the stitching gives the piece power and fragility.

  13. Ooops! Not what you want when you have just spent time doing the embroidery, is it? Trust all got redeemed!
Thanks for visiting and for your comments.
    Take care. God bless.
