A Birthday Card for my Nephew and WOYWW

With my nephew turning 16 and not surprisingly preferring money to anything I might choose for him, I decided to make him a card that presented the cash in a more innovative way than just popping it in an envelope!
This card is soooo not me!  Apart from the fact it's not my usual style, the whole rigmarole of paint techniques is not my strong point either.
I covered a piece of card with foil tape, embossed it and covered it with black antiquing cream - in my ignorance little did I know it would all come off in flakes with absolute minimal contact!  I 'glued' the remaining black bits onto the silver with varnish, while keeping my fingers crossed it would all stay on!  So far, so good!

I'm linking up with Julia over at WOYWW, and if anyone out there can advise on what I should have done to stop the black paint flaking yet control how much I rub off then I'd love to hear it!

  3. Youu may think it's "not you," Diana, but it still shouts your style! It's absolutely gorgeous, and really striking. I am sure your nephew will love it. It's good to get out of one's comfort zone occasionally, anyway. Thank you for your lovely comment - so glad you like my boxes! Hot glue is useless for metal. What do you use instead? I'm not convinced that the Pinflair glue will hold... And yes, the kitties are always looking out for the main chance when it comes to warmth and comfort! I was thrilled to find the peacock feather pattern - they look amazing once the barbs are on.

    Happy WOYWW,

    1. Thanks for your return visit, Diana. I hadn't thought of using gel medium. Like you, I love soft matt medium and always have it in. Someone else also suggested Glossy Accents, and also neat PVA and Gorilla glue too - so I've got lots of options to choose from! So far so good as far as the embellishments sticking on with Pinflair is concerned but the jury is still out. I've asked our friend to take care with it and to let me know if the feet fall off!

  5. Moning Diana. I'm with Shoshi - you may feel it is "So not" you - but it is so recognisably you. It's fantastic - well done.

  10. What a fabulous card Diana, it does us good to get out of our comfort zone once in while even if you did have a couple of issues with the flaking paint you must have looked at it and saw it was worth all that extra time. Amazing way to give an extra treat, i'm more than sure it was very well received.
Thank you so much for sharing WOYWW you share so much creativity.

  13. I’m totes ignorant about antiquing cream. I would have freaked out, sulked and then bineed the lot, so I think this finished card is a total triumph Diana! And hey, your comment over at Jan’s about those photographs made me smile. Jan and I were chatting on the phone about them ( I have been to the gallery and seen other photos by this lovely gal) and I mentioned how marvellous you might find them and how sensational some of your works would be included in them..we agreed. But we often do about other people’s skills!

  14. I think the finished card is something of a triumph - especially given how far you were leaping outside your comfort zone. I'm sorry you had trouble with the antiquing cream - it shouldn't have done that, so I wonder whether maybe you've got a duff one. It goes on very liquid, you let it dry, but even once dry it is designed to wipe away with a wet cloth, and remains reactive to water until you seal it with a medium. I've never encountered it flaking. The scrolls are really cool - such a clever way to hold the money gift.

  15. Hi Diana, whether it's your normal style or not you've done a fantastic job. I can't help with tips for the flaking paint. Something like that would be too far outside of my comfort zone! Have a lovely week Heather x #27

  17. All the more impressive that you made something so out of your comfort zone, and yet it still turned out absolutely gorgeous. You're so clever to have that thought of presenting the money that way - I hope your nephew appreciated the love and work that went into it!
