Book Binding and WOYWW

I have long had a love affair with the art of book binding and over the years I've once or twice dabbled with very simple book binding techniques.  Recently I decided I needed a little sketch book for one of my projects so I decided to make my own.
This is a folded paper technique called Blizzard Binding and although fairly simple it's important to be very accurate with the folding - not so easy with big clumpy hands like mine, but I eventually ended up with a little book I was pleased with!
I decorated the front with pieces of hand-made silk paper, pressed Ginkgo leaves and copper foil.

As you can see below each page spread is one sheet of A6 Khadi paper folded in half and held in place at either end by the little folded triangles that flip open and closed - this means you can remove pages to work on, change pages around or replace them as required.

I am linking up with Julia over at What's On Your Work Desk Wednesday this week, and I am also linking up with the Mini Album Makers Challenge.

Update: I'm so pleased to have been chosen as one of the Top 5 in this month's Mini Album Makers Challenge.

  3. Oh my word that’s clever! That sort of accuracy is a bit beyond me I fear, but I love the remove-and-replace ability, it makes for the perfect sketch book/journal doesnt it. I’m always on the hunt for decent ring bound notebooks because it drives me nuts if they dont lie flat, so this binding has a huge appeal for me. Mind you, everything you’ve ever made has a huge appeal to me!

  21. What an exquisite little book, Diana - I simply must explore this technique and make a book like this! Not only is it a very attractive looking binding, but I love the idea of being able to remove and swap the pages around. What a clever idea. I also love book making and have explored some different binding methods, having tried a Coptic binding last year that was very successful. I adore books and boxes - they are so much more tactile and interactive than art hanging on the wall, and I am increasingly drawn to them.

You surprise me a lot by saying you've got big clumpy hands! Following your blog for so long and seeing all the intricate and exquisite work that is your hallmark, I'd have put you down as one with dainty little fingers lol!! Anyway, however big they may be, they are well connected to your heart and your brain and are more than capable of expressing your beautiful creative nature! Keep up the good work!

I simply adore your little book.

    Happy belated WOYWW,

  23. Thank you for your return visit, Diana, and I'm glad you like what I've done with the boxes My friend from Brazil gave me the music table napkins and I thought this was a nice use for them! I didn't do anything on them today because I was waiting for the rest of the hardware to arrive, which it did, and also because I had other things to see to. I've got till the 11th so don't need to over-pressurise myself. I'm also concerned about my health because my hernia has definitely returned and I've been having problems with it today. Dreading the thought I may need yet more surgery...
