Autumn Hydrangeas

All summer I've had a beautiful white hydrangea in the garden but over the last few weeks it's turned into the most amazing rusty pinks and reds with hints of golden browns in it.  I just had to dig out the hydrangea die that I used here recently and replicate that gorgeous colour scheme.  I was also inspired by the rich orange browns of the bracken that is all over the New Forest at the moment - I think it's more beautiful while it's dying back than when it's in full greenery.

This was an 'extra' I made with the flower I wasn't happy with - it seemed a shame to waste it -I'll probably add a stamped sentiment when I come to use the card as the bottom half looks rather bare!
Still no Christmas cards and not really feeling that bothered - I can't seem to summon up the enthusiasm for them so might not fit them in this year - although I may get a burst of inspiration next week, who knows!  I'm linking up with Julia over at WOYWW this week

  1. Morning Diana. Glorious! Well done. I'm with you - and much prefer bracken when dying back and caught in the sunlight - it just seems to glow on the mountainside. The people receiving those cards will have such a beautiful reminder of the autumn.
    Take care. God bless.

No card making here either. It’s bad enough having to write shop bought ones. I sound like the Grinch heehee

  13. Oh Diana... another simply stunning offering from you! I simply love this... I agree about the colour, and about autumn and decaying colours generally. My least favourite time of year is mid- to late-summer when the overwhelming greens are starting to get a bit tired, and when the autumn comes, I just love the rich colours and variety. Every individual leaf has gorgeous spots and irregularities too. Both your pieces are quite wonderful and have my mouth watering!!

What is the hydrangea die you’ve got?

I’m not taking part in WOYWW this week as I’ve been too busy, and in the middle of it all I’m having to deal with major computer problems involving reinstalling Windows and nothing is going smoothly! What a nightmare.

Have a great week and keep enjoying the colours!

  15. Exquisitely pretty - I think the middle card is my favourite of the three projects, but I do love them all. The hydrangeas look fiddly to make, but so worth the effort, especially in these wonderful rusty pink tones. I can clearly imagine the real life flowers which inspired you... you've captured the look perfectly.

  16. Thanks for your return visit, Diana, and I am so glad you enjoyed reading about our lovely experience with the birds of prey! I am glad I took notes during the talk because I would never have remembered it all otherwise. I have heard of the Hawk Conservancy place but have never been there. Thank you for the info about the die and I must look out for it or something similar - actually I had it in mind to design something in Inkscape to cut with my Cougar cutting machine but it would be nice to know the basic shapes of the flower pieces. Your hydrangeas look absolutely real! I am so glad you like the flowers I have made. I should be able to show what I have made with them after next week. I've still got one part to do, which has to be completed by mid-week and everything's upside down with the computer problems I've been having. Things are working more or less OK now but there are still a lot of loose ends to tie up to get it fully back to normal, and some things aren't working as they should. Problems, problems! It couldn't have come at a worse time really. I'm very busy with other stuff too and getting overtired again!

  17. Hi Diana, I am exactly the same. I love all the rusty, golden colours at the moment. I remember being struck by a pot plant in a florist that had the most beautiful browny leaves and petals. I bought it and took it home to proudly show my Mum only to be told I'd bought a dead plant! She was so green fingered I think she never knew what to do with me!

I have never got on with dies but you are making me think I should give them another try - I really thought you'd used real hydrangeas here.

I think I will have to follow your lead with the cyanotypes and do loads in the Summer when I leave uni. I really wanted to get good so I can do it on fabric. I will keep trying.

Sorry I'm so late in visiting, I don't know where the days are going!
