A Little Winter Garden in a Tin

I'm working my way through some half finished projects and came across this tin with a couple of half made cocoons in it.   I think the idea might have originally been for a midnight garden last summer, but I decided it was perfect to round off the winter and get another 'work in progress' finished!
The backdrop is a piece of old rust printed cloth that is lying on my desk waiting to be used in another project, but I thought they went quite well together!

I hope you are all staying safe and well in these challenging times.  I have been amazed at the selfless acts of kindness from the folks in my community - it lifts the spirit and renews my faith in mankind when I see such a supportive group of people on our local self-isolation support group pages.  I hope you are all getting the support you need and are coping fairly well with this horrible situation.
Sending virtual hugs to you and linking up via Julia over at WOYWW.

  1. Glad you are getting any help you need Diana. Love the piece on offer again today and the background is indeed the perfect backdrop. Stay safe and Happy WOYWW. Sarah #10

  2. Hi Diana. Sounds like many are going at their unfinished symphonies whilst we are all staying put. Just think what it would be like if we all put together an exhibition at the end of it all! Well done, you have another ticked off - and using the piece of cloth going to be assigned for something else was genius!!
Take care. Stay safe. God bless.

  3. Yet another desker who's resurrected UFOs, lol. We are going to have such amazingly clean and tidy craft rooms by the end of this!! Lovely pieces as usual, they remind me of a coral reef actually...I know, weird brain I have :-) Hope you're keeping safe and well,

  4. Hi Diana, I am always amazed at your ability to take a group of items and create something breathtaking! I'm also trying to clear up a lot of UFO's. Probably won't use up all of them, I'll be happy to just halve them, lol. Stay safe,Have a good week, Huge hugs, Shaz #1 X

  5. I think finally people are starting to realise how serious this is, and offering to help each other out. Your UFO's that you are working on are just gorgeous. Helen #5

  6. My UFOs remain unfinished, I'm afraid, Diana. Lockdown is not much different from normal for me!! I'm here all the time anyway, and lack the discipline to finish stuff. Every year it's a New Year resolution to tackle the ever-increasing quantity of UFOs and every year I fail! Anyway, yours is delightful. I love how you use the old clay pipes and other materials, and the rusty material is just gorgeous... Stay safe and well my friend, and thank goodness for kind neighbours and a good community spirit!

Happy WOYWW from a bit of a late arrival today,

  7. Thank you for visiting, Diana, and I'm glad you think my Celtic knots look nice and metallic! I still don't think I've perfected the technique yet... I always think a drop shadow lifts a project and usually end up adding one these days, like a sort of trademark! I found a very good set of instructions on how to get a textured background with Procreate online. Adjustment layers are amazing. I must look out my instructions for making texture overlays again - I really enjoyed making those a few years ago. You are right about the kitties - Lindart posted a photo of Mittsy saying "What virus?" Lol! If only they knew... The panic buying definitely seems to be subsiding, but the lack of delivery slots continues to be a problem. I had an email from Tesco today saying they were going to introduce safeguards for slots for their more vulnerable customers, so I hope that will be forthcoming soon, because just recommending people not to take up all the slots is never going to work. This week we are extremely well stocked up with food so I don't think I shall need to buy much next week, when there are no slots left. The freezer is well stocked, too, so I think we'll be OK.

  8. This is so sweet Diana. It really does look as though there is a trend for finishing half made projects. So often I'm in the middle of making something when another idea attacks my head and I move on to it without finishing the ongoing project and before you know there's a box full of half made stuff. Take care, keep safe and craft on. Sending hugs, Angela x3x

  9. Love these gentle blues - I think we are all trying to use this enforced activity to get things finished! Horrible as this situation is I do think it has sparked a real sense of community which can only be good. Happy WOYWW, Stay well, Stay safe, Cindy #23

  11. A gorgeous project. I am a new follower of your lovely blog and have been enjoying your very inspiring projects. I am totally at home with mixed media but now combining this with textiles after a inspiring workshop with my local Needleworkers Guild. I look forward to seeing more! Stay safe. Jennie

  12. What a gorgeous concoction - I find myself really wishing I could see it (and probably touch it - carefully - too!). Lovely photos - the backdrop is dreamy!
Acts of kindness are definitely helping me feel hopeful for us all too.
    Take care and stay well.

  13. I've been poring over the photos trying to peer into every nook and cranny of your wintry cocoon garden. There are so many delicious textures and details and knobbly delights! How satisfying to be bringing these creations-in-progress to completion. I'm completely in love with the rust-dyed cloth too... very much looking forward to seeing more of that some time.

I agree, there are so many uplifting tales shining against the dark and difficult times we are all facing. It gives one hope. Stay safe.

  14. Glorious colors, details and textures - altogether absolutely delightful, tucked into that sweet little tin! I am especially intrigued by the stone (?) tubular bits....rather like very large sea urchin pins but I rather doubt that is what they are, lol! The backdrop is perfect here, and like Alison, I look forward to seeing it in the future. Glad you are safe in these troubled times, with some positive happenings round you. Stay well - xxx Lynn (and thanks so much for your lovely visit.... my mojo appears to be in self-isolation recently, but I know, just like seedings, there are ideas incubating to emerge one of these days, or so I hope!)

  15. Once again you absolutely stun me with your ingenuity, creativity and amazing ability to create UFO's into works of art. Please do tell are the little tubular bits "clay pipe stems" or another mystery UFO. I have been watching "Mudlarking on the Thames" youtube clips and am now completely addicted and wondered if they are clay stems. On another note I hope I can master filming a short clip on making my watercolours. At the moment only an idea but as I have so many ideas and projects on the go.... what's another one or two . Stay safe as you create stunning works of art.

    1. Hi Sandra,
Yes they are clay pipe stems, I have a jar full and they get used for all sorts of projects! I love mudlarking finds, it's something I'd love to do but you need a licence I believe. I do hope you get your film clip made, I'd be very interested to see how you make your colours, I can imagine it would be quite addictive to get into and a double pleasure to make the paints as well as the art work! Hope life is going OK for you and you are coping with the restrictions. Stay safe and well,

  16. Wow, what a sweet piece that turned into, lovely set of colours and textures...I cant believe you have UFOs. I guess being so creative you just flit from thing to thing whilst the ideas are there. I don’t. As you know, I’m all card, paper and impatience so I rarely file things that aren’t working or fulfilling me. They just get cut up into the scrap box or put in the bin!! So happy to read that your community has come together, happier still to read that it’s clearly becoming a part of this strange normal. At last, huh! Keep well Diana.

  18. Morning Diana, what another beauty you have for us today I can imagine the joy of every stitch with each bead. Like Alison i'm zooming in to grasp as much detail as I can how I'd love to see this up close & know the size of this. Thank you for sharing with us all, makes me feel guilty about all those little textile projects I have all in isolation themselves. Wishing you well this Sunny Sunday & stay Safe Tracey #19 x
