WOYWW - Still Gelli Printing!

I have been continuing working on my gelli prints and have been developing the theme of gardens and enclosures.  I have always had an interest in the history of gardens and I love the idea of them changing from practical enclosures for planting food and keeping animals into areas for pleasure and relaxation.

The stencil/mask is taken from an image of a Sumerian pictogram on a clay tablet dating from 3000BC.  It's an extremely early representation of a garden with a tree planted in the middle of a triangular enclosure.

'Beyond the Enclosure'

If any one else is interested in this subject I have found some wonderful information and inspiration from two particular books - Penelope Hobhouse's 'Gardening Through the Ages' and 'The Invention of the Western Garden' by Vercelloni and Vercelloni.

I am linking up with WOYWW - why not nip over and see what's on other people's work desks this Wednesday!

  1. What a wonderful thought pattern and concept. I've got a lovely book on the gardens of GERTRUDE JEYKELL. I have had it for years but I think it's still available. You would love it Diana.

  10. Gosh Diana, that page is so interesting, not to mention completely gorgeous (again!) I think the Sumerian logo is wonderful...have you sent the Sumerian stuff in the British Museum?? It's amazing and knocks the Elgin Marbles into a cocked hat...in my humble opinion (!!). Your work looks like an old garden plan....quite wonderful!
Oh and judging by the response to the hare print last week, I'd go into production if I was you!! I'm taking it to be framed this weekend :)

  13. I love what you achieve with the Gelli plate. Your results are so different to what I have seen from other artists. I especially like the image on the left with the tree.

  16. I always misread WOYWW at first as "WOWW" and this really fits! Love your use of an ancient symbol along with more modern architectural garden layouts. The colors are fab, too. Just wonderful!

  19. I really love your journal page, it's so beautifully composed, and the colors are wonderful (I have such a weak spot for that shade of green). It seems that everything you create is so meaningful and has so much thought behind it, it really just shines out. (Love those itty bitty trees)

  25. I am obliged to say WOW.Because although I've seen loads and loads of gelli printed backgrounds, I haven't seen any deliberate and so beautifully used, they totally illustrate your interest. Fabulous dahlink.

  26. Gelli printing seems to be all the rage atm - it's not something I was keen to try until just recently when I started to see some really stunning work - yours certainly fits that category, Diana. When we are settled in our new home, this may be something I shall try! It's going to take me some time to get up and running again, though.

I love the garden theme, and the ancient Sumerian picture is most interesting - I wonder if it harks back to the Garden of Eden? The central tree in an enclosure is suggestive. It's a beautiful design. Taking inspiration from ancient pictograms and hieroglyphics is definitely an area worth exploring - many of them are highly decorative! They might also suggest Zentangle patterns...
