Collage - Image Pairings

In between making a small handful of Christmas cards this week I've continued with Challenge 6 in the Collage Workbook, which is called Image Pairings - to cut an image in half and use each half in a separate and distinctly different collage.
I chose the image of the birds hovering over the sea, and found the collages weren't as distinctly different as I had imagined they would be!  However, it was an enjoyable little project.

Together you can see the continuation of the main picture.

I have also been playing about with some more collages - not quite in the order of the book but I suddenly had an idea and had to act on it!  This one is about peeling back the layers to reveal what's underneath - quite a messy process!

I'm linking up with Julia over at WOYWW this week.

  1. I get what you meant about the collages, the tones, patterns and shapes aren’t a million miles away from each other - an interesting project! I have to lead the WI craft group in January and we’re doing a collages canvas, do you have any tips about reroutes for printing and cutting out…preferably free?
Your last project reminds me of an archaeological dig, lots of layers and stratigraphy (now there’s a sentence I din’t think I’d be using on WOYWW this morning, lol)

  2. Lovely collages. I see what you mean; their tones and intricacy are perhaps similar. Your last one looks interesting too

  4. An interesting concept - especially when you have them side-by-side - I can see how the image was cut in half. I often find when I use "strips" of collage that I corner myself and have to ask the question "ok, now what?" And usually the answer is to put something along the lines where the pieces meet - and that's exactly what you did here! So perhaps there's method in the madness LOL! Stripping layers is also something I do sometimes, but usually by accident - I stick something in the wrong place and when I try to remove it it rips - just call it a design feature! Lucky mixed media is so forgiving! Happy December! xx zsuzsa #18

  5. Amjust in the throes of cutting and sticking strips in my journal but they are blank strips to imitate boards of wood - nothing so nice as what you have here. Two great collages, I love the clown. I can see what you mean and it is evident when you put them together like you have done for us.
Peeling back the layers sounds interesting, if messy, look forward to seeing it finished.

  6. That's a really interesting idea to work with and I really must have a look at this book as I have lots of stuff collected for collage projects but just need some themes to get back to it again. Look forward to seeing how you get on with the new project too. Wishing you a very happy and creative woyww. Hugs, Angela x16x

  13. Back again Diana! I have had another look at your collages and I think they are linked by the halves of the same picture and the fact you have done them in a similar way. I had a look at Randell Plowman’s Collage a Day blog. I find I like those with a recognisable element like the birds and the ones that look (to me) like a background, I don’t like the abstract ones. I have been trying to work out how his bird ones are done and I think they are printed onto graph paper. I first thought they had been fussy cut. If I am right, I really like the idea of printing images this way. Can I ask you which glue you use? The book is in my shopping basket, but I am hesitant as always when I can’t see what I am buying. For me images are a real problem for collages, where do you find yours?

  15. See, you have an innate ability to coordinate, so nothing is jarring although very different. Quite a good exercise, that sort of collage, for those of us that can’t think out of the box! Nice rare pic of your work in progress, it fascinates me, this cover up and then remove process.

  17. Happy Very Belated WOYWW !! I love collage and really need to do more of it next year. I haven't done much journaling or mixed media for a while. Started on a mini online course, but did the first day very enthusiastically and then not had the time since to continue. I have made the decision not to join any more courses until everything is finished in my queue. Ali x #8
